Diabetes
Federal law gives students the right to receive the diabetes care they need to be safe and participate in school activities just like any other child. Schools should provide the following:
- Trained staff to monitor blood sugar levels and administer insulin and glucagon
- Trained staff to provide diabetes care during field trips, extracurricular events and all school-sponsored activities
- Capable students permitted to self-manage their diabetes anytime, anywhere.
In order for the school nurse to properly manage your student's diabetes in the school setting, it is necessary that we are provided with a diabetes management plan/emergency action plan, medication administration form, and supplies/emergency medications as prescribed by your student's physician. Your physician may provide you with forms they routinely use or you may bring the forms provided below to your physician to complete.
(Please refer to the FORMS section to find Diabetes forms to provide to the school nurse.)
