All-Day Kindergarten FAQ

When will all-day kindergarten be available in my school?

We understand the desire to offer all-day kindergarten as soon as possible in our schools. But first we need to build the space in our schools to be able to offer the program. Thanks to the support of our community in passing our Future Focused referendum in November 2018, we are already constructing new school spaces.

There will be a rolling implementation of all-day kindergarten as we complete construction on our school buildings over the next four years.

ADK Phased Rollout 2020-2024

Future Focused starts with our youngest learners

All-day kindergarten has begun in Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 -- even earlier than planned -- thanks to the support of our community through the research and planning of the D205 Community-Based All-Day Kindergarten Committee. The ADK roll out started in 2020.

After a multi-year community engagement process, we heard overwhelming community support for an all-day kindergarten (ADK) option. To ensure space in our neighborhood elementary schools and to make facility improvements throughout our school district, D205 asked voters to consider a Future Focused referendum in November 2018, which was approved by our community. The referendum will build two new schools, improve safety and security across the District, add future-ready learning spaces at all school sites, meet many other existing maintenance and infrastructure needs at all our schools, and provide the space for all-day kindergarten.

All-day kindergarten: did you know?

The November 2018 referendum will build enough space in our schools to provide all-day kindergarten for our students, and the D205 Board of Education voted in May 2019 to phase-in the early implementation of all-day kindergarten. Not only will this help our youngest learners but offering this program will enhance our entire community.

  • All-day kindergarten can decrease the need for remedial and intervention services later in elementary school. And offering a level playing field can help narrow the achievement gap, ensuring that all students reach learning benchmarks. When at-risk students are ready for success, it helps all students in the classroom.

  • Investing in early childhood education not only helps our kids, but adds value to our entire community. Our neighboring cities offer all-day kindergarten; introducing it here in Elmhurst 205 will help us remain competitive.
