Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 is pleased to announce the next Superintendent of District 205 schools. On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, during its regularly scheduled meeting, the Board of Education voted to approve veteran educator and school leader, Dr. Keisha Campbell, as Superintendent. She is currently the Director of School Leadership with the Academy for Urban School Leadership (AUSL) in Chicago, a network of 31 schools with over 16,000 students. Serving as Director of School Leadership since 2012, Dr. Campbell is responsible for leadership development and school academic achievement in eight schools with over 4,000 students. AUSL is a private organization that partners with Chicago Public Schools and other districts nationally, focusing on teacher training and leadership development to help schools make significant advances in academic achievement and school climate. Also a proud D205 parent and York High School graduate, Dr. Campbell will assume responsibilities in District 205 on July 1, 2021.
Dr. Campbell emerged as the top candidate after a robust, national search process led by the Board of Education in coordination with School Exec Connect, an executive search firm from Oak Park, IL. The Board interviewed eight semi-finalists and then narrowed the field to three finalists who returned for interviews with the Board and with stakeholder groups composed of students, teachers, parents, community members, administrators, and support staff.
“Dr. Campbell is an accomplished and respected veteran educator and leader. I have no doubt that our students and staff will grow and thrive under her leadership. We have laid a strong foundation, and we are confident that in the next few years, District 205 will be a nationally recognized District of excellence that is known not only by what we achieve but by the depth of our character,” D205 Board President Kara Caforio said.
Dr. Campbell is deeply committed to the continued success and forward movement of Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205: “As a proud middle school and high school graduate of District 205 and now a current parent of two D205 students, I’m deeply invested in our school district! My husband and I returned to this community because of the schools. In collaboration with the Board of Education, district administration, school leaders, staff, parents, students, and community members, we will ensure all students learn, grow, and have the best educational experiences possible by nurturing and supporting each of them emotionally, socially, and academically.”
Upon her graduation from York High School, Dr. Campbell earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Illinois State University. Dr. Campbell earned a Master of Education in Instructional Leadership from the University of Illinois-Chicago and a Doctor of Education in Leadership from the same institution in 2014. Dr. Campbell’s 20+ years of service and experience range from classroom teacher to school-based instructional coach to district literacy coach and elementary/middle school principal. Dr. Campbell has worked with AUSL in leadership roles since 2008 and has served as Director of School Leadership for nine years.
As a building principal, Dr. Campbell’s exemplary leadership capacity resulted in significant student achievement gains, including an increase of 30% of students meeting and exceeding standards in just three years, 98% of students meeting national growth targets in math, and 90% of students meeting literacy targets as measured by NWEA.
As a Director of School Leadership, she led the development of vastly competent, high-performing adult teams, resulting in a 16% increase in student attainment as measured by NWEA, and 100% of her schools increasing in School Quality Performance Rating (SQRP). Her relentless focus on student engagement and the student experience was central to her success, resulting in over 96% student attendance attained across school campuses along with academic gains.
In addition to supervising principals and managing schools, Dr. Campbell also serves as a resource and leader for all school campuses in developing and prioritizing social-emotional wellness for adults and students. Her expertise spans from building organizational capacity to drive student achievement, leadership development, continuous school improvement cycles, equity-focused practices, utilization of data to inform decision making, and maintaining strong communication structures while cultivating and sustaining trusting relationships with all stakeholders.
Dr. Campbell is a sought-after speaker and has been invited to present and share with districts, school leaders, teachers, and parents on topics including growth mindset, social-emotional learning, high leverage instructional practices, principal leadership and support, parent engagement, and school transformation and growth strategies. In 2010, she was personally invited to present to the U.S. Department of Education on School Reform and Improvement. She was a recipient of the Golden Apple Teaching Scholarship and numerous other awards. She has consulted with the Gates Foundation on the improvement of district structures to increase student achievement and continues her professional growth and development as a District Administrator in partnership with the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership.
