Internet Safety, Digital Citizenship & Media Literacy
Elmhurst District 205 Library Media spaces foster a love for literacy, discovery, and creation, establishing avenues for all students to explore individual curiosities and passions, safely extending learning beyond the school’s walls and into our communities. Included in this vision are lessons and standards for introducing Makerspace opportunities alongside Internet Safety, Digital Citizenship, and Media Literacy.
Public Act 095-0869 (also referred to as the Illinois Internet Safety Act) states each school district must incorporate into the school curriculum a component on Internet Safety to be taught at least once each school year to students in grade 3 and above. Here at Elmhurst, we introduce Internet Safety lessons beginning in Kindergarten. These lessons are created based on our approved district curriculum designed by Common Sense Media.
Additionally, Public Act 102-0055 (also referred to as the Media Literacy Act) requires every public high school include in its curriculum a unit of instruction on media literacy, including instruction on how to access information, analyze and evaluate media messages, create media, reflect on media consumption, as well as the social responsibility of engaging with media of all forms.
