Summer Reading for Middle Schoolers

This summer, District 205 will be utilizing the Elmhurst Public Library’s “Summer Reading for Middle Schoolers” list in an effort to support and encourage middle school students’ active summer reading. The purpose for promoting summer reading is to reinforce students’ continued development and growth of their overall comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, reading fluency, and background knowledge. For the summer reading, students in grades 6-8 for the 2013-14 school year will be required to read two books within the same genre from the “ ” list. All titles on the list are organized by genre. This will allow students the flexibility to choose current books of their interest. Please note if you live outside of the Elmhurst Public Library district, you may take the reading list to your local public library to select your summer reading. Before students leave school for the summer, teachers reviewed, modeled and distributed a packet of information about the summer reading expectations. All of this information is available on District 205’s Literacy webpage. The packet included the following: from the district explaining the summer reading expectations for middle school students; identifying the characteristics of the various genre types, to assist students in their book selection; Students will be required to complete one reading guide for both books they read. Students must bring their completed reading guide to their new teacher when they return to school in the fall. Students must be prepared to discuss and apply knowledge about their selected genre to classroom assignments. Best wishes for a delightful summer of reading and more.
