D205 Passes $168.5M Referendum

Voters approved a $168.5 million referendum to improve District 205 schools. As of 10 p.m., the ballot measure passed receiving nearly 63% of voters' support. The school community pledged over 10,500 votes “yes” to support the measure to enhance safety and security, rebuild and renovate school buildings, and create future-ready schools.

"I would like to thank all of the people who worked so hard to make this a reality that not only addresses our long term facility issues but also provides modern, safe, high quality learning spaces for our children to learn and our employees to effectively facilitate personalized learning opportunities for all children.  The outcome today reinforces the community's value on the importance of education.  This is a banner day for Elmhurst that will help ensure a healthy, vibrant community for decades to come," Superintendent Dr. David Moyer said.

Board President Kara Caforio added, “The Board of Education is grateful for the outpouring of support by our community for our schools. The results of the vote exhibit our community's continued commitment to providing excellent education for both current students and generations of students to come.  We look forward to working with the community as the Master Facility Plan now becomes a reality for our students."

The Board of Education along with Dr. Moyer will address future steps for the school district during the next regular BOE meeting at 7:30 p.m. on November 13, 2018.

Tonight’s decision culminates nearly four years of community engagement, originally called Focus 205, that was born out the school community’s desire to approach vast building improvements in a comprehensive way. On Aug. 20, 2018, D205’s Board of Education voted 7-0 to place a Master Facility Plan on the ballot that would rebuild an aging Field and Lincoln Elementary Schools, expand and renovate Edison Elementary School, and make room for All-Day Kindergarten as well as make substantial maintenance and future-ready improvements across the school district. The plan is set to address D205’s building needs for the next 20 years.
