Late Start Schedule Info

Classes may start two hours later than usual during emergency conditions

District 205 has implemented a late start plan as an alternative to cancelling school for an entire day due to an emergency such as weather. A late start schedule would be used if weather conditions are expected to improve and/or clear up by late morning, allowing students and staff to travel to school safely. The late start schedule would allow the district to avoid losing a full day of instruction, maintain the school calendar, meet the state requirements for number of school days, and to capture a significant portion of the instructional time in the school day. In the event that a late start day is implemented, there would not be a need to use an end of the year emergency day, therefore not extending the school year to make-up for emergency closing days.

If a late start schedule is activated:

·        Schools will begin exactly two hours later than usual.
·        All buses will operate exactly two hours behind their usual schedule.
·        Parent drop off time will be two-hours later than usual.

Late start schedules are as follows:

Kindergarten and Early Childhood
Morning (a.m.) kindergarten and early childhood classes will be cancelled. Afternoon (p.m.) kindergarten and early childhood classes will begin and end at their usual times.

Elementary Schools
Class starts at 10:15 a.m. with drop-off from 10:00 – 10:10 a.m. Students will be dismissed at the usual time of 3 p.m. Lunch will remain at the usual time of 11:05 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.

Middle Schools
Class starts at 10:20 a.m. with drop-off between 10:00-10:15 a.m. Lunch period lengths will remain the same and an alternative class schedule will be put in place, but dismissal times will remain the same.

High School
First period will begin at 9:45 a.m. An alternative schedule will be put in place, but dismissal times will remain the same. After school activities and athletics could remain as scheduled weather permitting.

Out-of-District Programs
If out of district programs are in session, transportation will start on a late start schedule. Students will not be penalized.

Before/After School RecStation
The a.m. RecStation program will not be offered on late start days. The p.m. (after school) RecStation hours will remain as scheduled on late start days.

Before School Programs
All before-school programs, including but not limited to, orchestra, band, choir, clubs, athletic practices or student activities will be cancelled on late start days.

Field Trips
Any field trip scheduled on the day of a late start will be cancelled as would be the procedure on days when school is cancelled for emergency reasons.

Technology Center of DuPage (TCD)
Due to the modified schedule, only PM TCD students will attend TCD.

When Elmhurst CUSD 205 determines that weather conditions or an emergency situation warrant the Late Start Schedule, families would be notified in the same manner they would be notified in the event of a school closing. Each family will receive a phone and email notice from our rapid notification system (AlertNow).

In addition, weather closings and late start information will also be available on www.emergencyclosingcenter.com, the district/school websites (www.elmhurst205.org), and on the hotline at 847-238-1234. Late start information and/or school closures will also be communicated to all local Chicago television and radio stations.

Please note the important distinction in the two emergency options. If there will be two hour delay to the school day the notice will read “Late Start – Two Hour Delay” and if there is a school cancellation, the notice will state “School is Cancelled or Closed.”

On late start days, parents and staff are encouraged to monitor the District’s website for updates on the status of after-school activities. Information about York athletics would be posted on the York School webpage in the afternoon.
